Job Purpose

The overall role and responsibility of a Care Assistant in the Pre School is to provide support to provide support to Children with a Global Developmental Delay and their families through education plans and play in order to assist the child in achieving their full potential.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. To assist the Senior Team member/team members in the delivery of appropriate services to all children attending Preschool and their families

2. Adhere to all Stewarts Care policies, Tusla guidelines and Policies and all other Governmental, National and International Policy

3. Assist in the assessment, development, implementing and Evaluation of creative programmes suitable for Children with an Intellectual Disability ensuring all efforts are made to cater for all the child’s needs.

4. Receive reports, report back on observations and provide written reports as required. Appreciate the importance of legal aspects and to be able to write a statement concerning any accident or incident, which occurs to a child, staff member, customer or visitor.

5. To accept delegated responsibility for children when requested by the Line Manager

6. To participate in all areas of own Learning and Development

7. To attend all compulsory training within the Service

8. To observe strictly to the Code of Confidentiality

9. Work the required hours to meet the service needs of the Preschool

Qualifications & Experience

Candidates must meet the following criteria relevant to the role:

Minimum QQI Level 5 (Healthcare Support) or SKILL-VEC Level 5

Meet minimum DCYA Early years recognised Qualifications

Strong desire to work with Children with Intellectual Disability

The aptitude to provide a child and family cantered approach to Education,

Learning and Care

Excellent communication skills both verbal and non-verbal

Knowledge of Tusla Early Years inspectorate - Quality and Regulatory Framework

Experience of working within the childcare setting

IT skills


Experience of working with Children with an Intellectual Disability

Experience of Tusla registration and Aistear

Experience of working with Children with ASD

Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health consolidated pay scales. Salary will be paid on a pro-rata basis.

Current Salary Scale: €29,417-€42,313

Salaries and increments are paid in accordance with DOH salary scales and on a pro-rata basis

22 Days per annum pro-rata

Working week

The hours allocated to this post are 19.5 hours per week, exclusive of lunch breaks.

The allocation of these hours will be at the discretion of the line manager in accordance with the needs of the service. The successful applicant must have a flexible approach to the hours of work, depending on the needs of the service. This role is responsible for leading crisis/emergency response to non-care issues.


This is a pensionable position. The successful candidate upon appointment will be become a member of the appropriate pension scheme. This will be detailed in the contract of employment.


All employees will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months, with an extension if required to 9 months. This probationary period applies to all employees irrespective of their role or type of role.

Garda Vetting

Stewarts will carry out Garda vetting on all new employees. An employee will not take up employment with the organisation until the Garda Vetting process has been completed and the organisation is satisfied that such an appointment does not pose a risk to the service users and employees.
