The Organisation:

Stewarts Care is a long-established voluntary organisation providing comprehensive community-based services to people with intellectual disabilities in the West Dublin area.

We support people with a wide range of support needs across residential settings, day services, supported independent living, job advocacy and vocational training.

Purpose of the Post:

To provide a person-centered, evidence-based speech and language therapy service to Service Users in Stewarts Care. This incorporates the provision of Feeding, Eating, Drinking and Swallowing (FEDS) management and the provision of supports for Service Users’ communication skills, using a variety of approaches. The post holder will work in conjunction with members of the multidisciplinary team work to enhance the quality of life of the Service Users of Stewarts Care.

Candidates must meet the following criteria relevant to the role:

• Bachelor of Science in Clinical Speech and Language Studies from the University of Dublin or equivalent qualification. Professional Qualifications received outside the Republic of Ireland including the U.K must be validated by the Validation unit of CORU prior to commencement of employment.

• Registered with CORU as a Speech and Language Therapist

• Membership or eligibility for membership of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT).

• Minimum of three years satisfactory post qualification experience

• Excellent communication skills

• Evidence of the ability to achieve results through effective collaboration in a complex environment.

Salary and qualifications are in accordance with Department of Health consolidated pay scales. Salary Scale is Senior Speech and Language Therapist: €58,599-€68,998 per annum.

Job Purpose

To provide an evidence-based speech and language therapy service to Service Users in Stewarts Care. The post holder will work in conjunction with members of the multidisciplinary team to enhance the quality of life of the Service Users of Stewarts Care.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

• Provide a quality speech & language therapy service through assessment, diagnosis and management of communication and FEDS difficulties for Service Users.

• Monitor, audit and evaluate communication and FEDS care plans and interventions.

• Contribute to current departmental quality improvement work that may include, project work, research, evaluation, audit, service development and evaluation of resources.

• Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to ensure integrated care for the Service User.

• Represent the department / profession / team at meetings and conferences as designated by the SLT Manager.

• Consult with service users and their families/key workers regarding assessment, treatment and education as appropriate.

• Participate in the development of clinical protocols and guidelines reflective of evidence-based practice.

• Manage clinical and non-clinical caseloads appropriate to the post.

• Become familiar with and work in accordance with relevant HSE policies, HIQA standards, New Directions, legislation and professional policies, guidelines and requirements to ensure safe practice and high standards of service delivery.

• Promote a culture that values equality, diversity and respect in the workplace.

• In conjunction with the Speech and Language Therapy Manager, contribute to the development and implementation of procedures, policies and guidelines while adhering to existing standards and protocols.

• Supervision of Basic Grade SLTs and student SLTs as appropriate.

Health & Safety

• Comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards.

• Assist in the development, implementation and review of the department’s Health and Safety statement, as appropriate.

• Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of the relevant person(s)

• Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others

• Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.

• Comply with department procedures with regard to assessment, recommendation and / or manufacturing of all assistive devices.

• Support a culture that values diversity and respect.

This job description is an overview of the general duties for the Senior SLT role within the Adult Service. Other duties may be included, if necessary, by the SLT Manager and /or Clinical Director.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

Senior Speech and Language Therapist

Remuneration

1. Salary and qualifications are in accordance with HSE consolidated pay scales €58,599-68,998 inc LSI per annum (Occupational Therapist Grade).

• Your salary is paid monthly (16th unless when 16th falls on Saturday or Sunday you are paid on the Friday prior to the 16th) by direct credit transfer into any Bank or Building Society of your choice where the paypath system operates.

Annual leave

• 29 Days per annum

Working week

• The hours allocated to this post are 35 hours per week with a 7-hour standard working day, exclusive of lunch breaks.

• The allocation of these hours will be at the discretion of the Director of Clinical Services and in accordance with the needs of the service.

Probation

• All employees will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months, with an extension if required to 9 months. This probationary period applies to all employees irrespective of their role or type of role.

Garda Vetting

• Stewarts will carry out Garda vetting on all new employees. An employee will not take up employment with the organisation until the Garda Vetting process has been completed and the organisation is satisfied that such an appointment does not pose a risk to the service users and employees.
