The Stewarts Sailing Gateway Hub was established in 2024 to provide a sailing experience for people with an intellectual disability supported by Stewarts Care.

Operating from the West Pier in Dun Laoghaire, the Sailing Hub aims to open the world of sailing to supported individuals and provide them with the knowledge and skills to continue their interest in sailing and the outdoors.

From our base at the INSS building at the West Pier, we offer opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities to experience and learn about sailing and power boating.

Stewarts Sailing Programme

Currently, the Stewarts Sailing Programme is open to individuals with disabilities who are supported by Stewarts Care.

Over a six-week programme, participants learn about important sailing techniques, equipment used, and safety when out in the boat.

They gain an understanding of the environment around them – including the weather, the wind, and the water, and learn about the importance of teamwork and communication, problem solving, and decision-making.

The programme aims to empower individuals and build a positive sense of community, on and off the water.

Coming Soon – Accessible Sailing for All

In 2026, Stewarts will add an inclusive catamaran to the Sailing Hub, offering accessible sailing opportunities for wheelchair users and other people with mobility difficulties.

This will provide a more accessible experience for individuals supported by Stewarts but also facilitate the opening of an accessible sailing experience for others outside the service.

With this addition, our ambition is to open the Hub to other people with disabilities outside of Stewarts, to support accessible sailing for all within the region.
